Nose
The nose is one of the body’s most visible parts which adds to the character of the whole face. This organ of breathing and smell can upset its owners because of aesthetic and functional reasons. The nose can be „different” since birth or following an accident. In the former group, it is possible to wait for the change of skull development till about 20 years of age and then there is no reason to delay the corrective procedure any longer.
Plastic surgery
There are different aspects of the nose which can be corrected, including bumps, deviations, as well as the overall size and shape. At Asklepion we find this surgery is being requested by patients more and more frequently. It is performed with local or general anaesthesia during one or two days admission. After the surgery the nose has to be tamponaded for one to three days and plaster of Paris cast worn for 10–14 days. The operation needs about 14 days of convalescence.
There is a classical operation or laser procedure for the removal of nasal tonsils. The laser does not require general anaesthetic; we recommend sedation, where the sleep is regulated. There is direct visual control when the tonsil is „evaporated”, the procedure lasts 15 minutes.
The removal of polyps is possible with laser as a day case, using controlled sedation. The operation lasts about 30 minutes.
For chronic cold a so called laser mucotomy is used, where the swollen nasal lining is „evaporated”. The nose is cleared and normal conditions for breathing are established. The procedure is done as a day case, with the local anaesthetic and minor soreness is experienced for only a few minutes.
The nose is also the exhibition place for different problems such as small veins, warts, freckles, acne. All this can be treated by laser and disappear without any marks.
