Skin lesions

There are benign skin outgrowths, spots and other lesions on every man’s skin. Some are caused by infection, others form due to benign cell proliferation. It is important to recognise that after some years a few of them may suddenly change to a malignant growth. It is important to observe any lesions which start to change appearance and need early diagnosis and possibly subsequent removal.

The important rule before removing of any skin lesion is the detailed examination when it is recognized if the pathology is benign, malignant or has the potential to progress to malignancy. The experienced dermatologists of Asklepion have got an instrument called DermoGenius. This machine photographs the dangerous looking lesions and compares them with a few million lesions retained in the memory of this machine. In about 99% it can be determined if the tumour is malignant or potentially malignant.

If the specialist believes that the routine methods are adequate for the removal of that lesion the optimal one is chosen. In addition to the surgical way of removing skin lesions, Asklepion has got the expertise in laser procedures.

The later is very convenient for patients. The discomfort is prevented by the application of anaesthetic cream, which is left in place for about 1–2 hours. The specialist then removes the lesion by so called Erbium laser, there is no bleeding and it lasts just a few seconds. The treated place does not need stitches, and there is no scaring. During 2–3 days the wound is closed and in a few weeks all is healed. The occasional scab or reddening disappears. The method is so gentle that the patient cannot recognise in the future the site of the lesion.

There was a patient treated in Asklepion with more than five thousand infected lesions. The removal lasted about an hour and today the patient is completely free of scaring. It was unthinkable that this patient could have been treated by surgical intervention.

Also there are only minimal restrictions after laser treatment. Usually, resuming work and social life can start on the 4th day after the procedure when only a small scab is present at the treatment site. Bathing is not recommended for about a week and showering is allowed. It is also recommended to avoid going in the sauna for about a week and not to perform sports which cause marked sweating. The site should be protected against the sun rays, with creams such as Photoderm, during the two following months.
