Snoring
Snoring, noisy breathing caused by vibrations of the soft palate, is not only a social problem, but also a disease, sleep disorder. In our society about 25 % of men and 15 % of women snore. The „loud sleep” is frequently a sign of illness, such as high blood pressure, obesity, chronic cold. Frequently it can be a sign of sleep apnoa, which can lead to heart problems and cerebral vessel accidents.
Asklepion was the first place in Czech Republic where lasers were used for snoring treatment.
It is a revolutionary technique for solving this problem and today the laser operation for snoring is one of the most frequent procedures which our clients are treated for. The majority of clients are fully cured by this technique, the others improve considerably.
Before lasers the treatment of this problem consisted of techniques for changing sleeping position or using a special „dental prosthesis”. There was also available a surgical operation associated with a relatively long hospitalization.
With new laser procedure there is plastic remodelling of the soft palate with laser rays. This operation is simple, day centre treatment, lasting about 5–10 minutes, which follows after the detailed examination by the ENT specialist.
The procedure itself is not painful and the treated tissue does not bleed. The doctor uses spray and later injection to desensitize the area. There is general anaesthetic available for those who desire this. The specialist uses the diode laser to adjust the uvula and soft palate in the oral cavity.
We use a series of small procedures, not one off treatment, to improve the client’s gradual adaptation to the new palate. When it heals properly the patient is reassessed and it is decided if there is any need to repeat the procedure or if specific medicines should be introduced.
The duration and details of treatment vary in individual patients. The pain during healing is comparable to pain during severe tonsillitis. The client should be prepared for this discomfort, it lasts about 5–10 days. The experience of our specialists with this procedure is unique within the medical world, because we have already treated more than 5 000 patients.
